Hindustan Syringes & Medical Devices reduces syringe production as demand for vaccination drops

Rajiv Nath, managing director, HMD, told ET that the government has either suspended the orders or rescheduled it to next year.

“The government suspended the orders which were placed last year. They rescheduled some orders which we were supposed to supply in May this year. However, they have been rescheduling it and now they have asked us to supply it by June next year,” he said.

The company meets two-thirds of India’s total syringe requirements. HMD operates four manufacturing units within an 11-acre complex in Faridabad.

Nath said that demand for Covid vaccination has slid in the last few months. “Demand for covid vaccination is not much now. From over 40 lacs per day of AD Syringes for Covid-19 vaccination we make hardly 5-6 lacs daily, mostly for children Covid vaccination for Pfizer vaccine for exports,” he further said.

Considering that Covid vaccination would result in demand for syringes going up, HMD had earlier converted all its lines from standard DispoVan syringes to Kojak AD Syringes. “We have converted back to standard Disposable Syringes and running at pre Covid levels,” he said.

Nath said his company is facing a huge cost impact due to the suspension and rescheduling of orders by the government.
