Bangalore: Manipal Hospitals announced its partnership with Isansys Lifecare, and unveiled a new initiative of continuously monitoring high risk and vulnerable patients across the care areas using Isansys Patient Status Engine (PSE). The PSE, an FDA and CE/ EU MDR approved solution, is used for wirelessly and remotely monitoring and managing patients who are borderline sick and need constant status updates of their health condition to their doctors.

Many patients are borderline ill and do not require ICU, but their health must be constantly monitored. With PSE, it will be possible for both doctors and nurses to monitor the patients on a continuous basis outside of ICU thereby reducing cost. This system is currently installed in the wards of Manipal Hospitals. However, it will be expanded to all units in the future. PSE will assist hospitals and doctors to constantly monitor patients’ basic vitals, such as heart rate, temperature, saturation, blood pressure and ECG along with minute-by-minute Early Warning Score (EWS) which is live streamed to the central monitoring station and mobile phones of the caregivers’ team. This will help patients to get proactive treatment based on early detection to avoid emergencies.

The Patient Status Engine is a technologically advanced, entirely wireless patient monitoring system. It is a comprehensive, pre-built, configurable platform that allows patients in acute and chronic conditions to be monitored in any healthcare facility, including general and high dependency wards, patient rooms, ambulances and even homes. It allows for the quick establishment of virtual wards and seamlessly incorporates patients’ vital sign data into the electronic medical record system used by hospitals or other healthcare providers. The PSE gathers, analyses, and converts all clinical vital sign data into useful insights by using clinical wearable sensors, connectivity, and AI into one medical platform.

Commenting on the development, Karthik Rajagopal, COO, Manipal Hospitals, said “This platform displays changes in the parameters that require prompt medical treatment or intervention. Deployment of PSE in ward and HDU will ensure patient safety and free up and ensure optimal usage of hospital ICU beds for critically care patients and acute emergencies”.

Keith Errey, CEO, Isansys, said “We are delighted to be partnering with Manipal Hospitals in this ground-breaking initiative. It is an honour to work with Karthik and his clinical colleagues who have a global reputation for quality and clinical excellence. PSE has benefitted patients in many countries and we are looking forward to Manipal creating that success story in India”

Dr Venkatesh Gupta, Consultant of Critical Care at Manipal Hospitals, said “The system easily and automatically gathers and evaluates patients’ vital signs, which helps in assisting in clinical decision-making by enabling prompt actions that improve patient care and safety in hospitals as well as at home.”

With the launch of this programme, Manipal Hospitals seeks to build a safety net for all patients who come to the hospital. Also, being a portable wireless device, patients are not bound to their beds and are free to live their lives to the best of their medical condition.
